Script questions
Is there a free alternative to Final Draft?
Yes. Unsubbed Script is a free, open-source screenplay editor that runs in your browser. It formats scene headings, action, characters, parentheticals, dialogue and transitions in standard page layout as you type, prints to PDF, and opens and saves .fdx files. It is not affiliated with Final Draft.
Does Script upload my screenplay?
No. Script runs entirely in your browser and makes no outside network requests. Your screenplay is kept in this browser on your own device, and you save copies as ordinary files whenever you like. There is no account, no analytics and no server, and the code is public on GitHub for anyone to check.
Which file formats does Script use?
Script saves Fountain, a plain-text screenplay format that many writing apps can read. It also opens and exports .fdx files, so you can move a script in or out of other screenwriting software. For sharing and printing, it makes a standard PDF on US Letter or A4 paper, with an optional title page and scene numbers.
Does Script work on a phone or offline?
Yes. Script works in any modern browser on computers, Chromebooks, tablets and phones. On a phone, the element buttons sit in a row at the bottom of the screen. Once the page has loaded it needs no connection, so you can keep writing on a plane or anywhere else without Wi-Fi.
